As building owners and developers learn of the benefits of energy efficient, environmentally-responsive (sustainable) design, they are requiring their construction managers to be familiar with the methods and techniques of designing and constructing sustainable buildings.
Many owners are choosing the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system for their program requirements. LEED takes into account project details within six categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design Process. A certain number of prerequisites is necessary to receive a certification, but LEED provides many credits from which to pick and chose in order to construct a certified building. There are four levels of certified buildings: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The more credits, the higher the recognition and certification.
Barr & Barr has been fortunate to have been involved with several projects that stressed integrating green building techniques and material usage into the delivery process. We have achieved or are applying for LEED certification on many of our recent and current projects.
